When was the last time you tried something new?

When was the last time you tired something new

I’d been feeling like I was stuck in a bit of a rut recently. It had got to the point where every day felt the same as the last and before I knew it, another week had flown passed. So I decided to add some variety to my day to day and to try something new.

I wasn’t sure what that exactly meant so I thought I’d see what opportunity would present itself…

Within a few weeks a friend told me about a new craft workshop that was taking place. The idea was that each week you’d make something different, there would be Prosecco (Score!), nibbles, and a chance to chat, meet new people and make something crafty.

So I signed up!

I’ve been to three classes so far and here’s what I’ve discovered about trying something new:

You learn a new skill

I think we get out of the habit of learning new skills. Once we leave school, college, university, the only training that you get is usually job related. Learning something new, just for fun, is just that! It doesn’t matter what age you are, or what you choose to do, learning can be fun!

Turns out, I can’t draw!  I did know that before the craft class, but I can now confirm that it is true. However, I love making and decorating things and I’m quite pleased with what I did end up with.

Once you pick up one new skill it gives you the appetite to try other things. You might even find that you have a talent for something that you never knew you could do and who knows where that might lead?

Meeting new people

Walking into the first class I was greeted by 20 friendly ladies. Many had also come to the class on their own. They might have started off as a strangers, but we were all soon chatting and laughing.

Conversations started out with “can you pass me the scissors please” and ended up with ” I’ve just started internet dating…”

I probably look forward to seeing the ladies each week more than I do making the crafts, and we’ve also started a Facebook group. Strangers have become friends. So if you’re wanting to meet new people, I strongly recommend registering for a class of some sort.

Its good for your well being

Regardless of the type of day that I’ve had, for the 2 hours that I’m there I completely forget about everything else. I completely focus on whatever it is that we’re making that week and switch off from everything else.

There is a lot of laughter! A lot!

Anything that helps you switch off, relax and have fun can only be good for you.

So if you’ve been thinking of trying something new, I say give it a go.

You never know you could come away with a new skill and a load of new friends!

After reading this you’re now wondering what Ive made aren’t you?

This is the result of the last class. Ok so its not Picasso but I had fun so does it really matter?

I can relate! I feel like that so often, but it is hard for me to step out of my comfort zone. I really need to take your example here.

Wow, this sounds like such a fun idea. I love trying new things, but often get stuck in a cycle of daily routines. Great reminder to get out there.

Yes! This blog is totally relatable! We’ve all been in a pace where we feel as though we are in a rut. Love your suggestions for a craft workshop – working with my hands is one way I reconnect to the Light and the Life within me. I also love the idea of meeting new people in the process so that I find others in the process. Thank you for this! <3

What a great idea! I always look to try new things every week but it normally consists of a new yoga pose or something. I’m going to have a look into events like this in my area, will be good to push myself out of my comfort zone too!

I desperately need to try something new. After moving across the country two years ago, we have not found a church home, made any friends (real ones at least), or tried anything at all exciting in our new hometown. It wears you down to do the same things over and over. I needed this, thanks for sharing.

These are great tips! I recently told myself that I’m going to continue to try learning how to crochet! I started at one point and stopped…but it’s been a while since I tried anything new, mainly because mom life lol.

Starting something new for me was starting my blog. I had been wanting to do it for awhile now but always had an excuse. I eventually just went for it and everything you said in this post is so true!

A month ago I was invited to a blogger party where I”d be meeting everyone for the first time. I am pretty shy and was so scared to go, but it turned out to be an absolute blast and I’m so glad I gave it a try! It’s so scary to do something new sometimes but it can be so rewarding, too!

What a great way to get out and challenge yourself… I love the Scissors to internet dating… its so true, once we open up as women we really open up! 🙂 And your end creation is absolutely beautiful… i guess by trying something new like this if you dont get anything else from the experience youll at least have something to take home at the end of the day!

Great post! Love your artwork! Its beautiful! I couldn’t agree more! I recently started going for beauty workshops and its a lot of fun and laughter and not forgetting the yummy brunch we always have before the workshops. I’ve also met a few friends there. Thanks for sharing!

Learning something new, meeting new people, and trying new things should always be encouraged. I agree that it becomes easy to shy away from learning new things. (I’m a teacher, that’s no such thing for me, but it applies to a lot of people that I know.) Honestly, everyone should read this post, and it has inspired me to try new things throughout the year.

Lucy 16 January, 2018 - 8:14 pm

That’s so good to hear. Its easy to stick with what you know. Sometimes we have to push ourselves to try something different.

Joanna 15 January, 2018 - 9:18 pm

This is a great idea, to try new things to get out of routine! I have tried a lot of new things last year actually, when I took a month just for myself, went to Italy and didn’t say no to anything. I ended up doing amazing things and meeting beautiful people! 🙂

Lucy 16 January, 2018 - 8:13 pm

That sounds like quite an adventure! Make sure its not a one off and plan your next trip again soon.

Rachel 15 January, 2018 - 10:33 pm

Love this! It’s so important to get out of your comfort zone and try new things. And your heart is so adorable!

Lucy 16 January, 2018 - 8:12 pm

Thank you Rachel. I think I surprised myself making this! Its now proudly hanging in my hall 🙂

Melissa 17 January, 2018 - 2:32 am

Such a great idea! And your heart is super cute! I did string art as a kid but don’t think I would remember how now!

Kayla Lauer 18 January, 2018 - 4:34 am

I think your creation is lovely! Great experiment, makes me want to go out and sign up for a class myself!.

Steph Crandall 23 March, 2018 - 3:49 pm

I so need to do this, but I’m always stuck with what to actually do. I’m definitely stuck in my comfort zone and don’t want to leave. lol

Lucy 30 March, 2018 - 7:31 am

Its the thought of walking into a room and not knowing anyone isn’t it? Signing up to a class with a friend makes it less daunting.

Laure 23 March, 2018 - 8:27 pm

This is so true! And getting out of your comfort zone increases your confidence and builds character also. A few years ago I joined a self defence class and before I knew it I was signing up for all kinds of classes that I never would have dreamed of joining before!

Love the heart 😊

Lucy 30 March, 2018 - 7:27 am

That’s great to hear Laure. You’re an inspiration!

Kasia Olszewski 23 March, 2018 - 10:03 pm

I am such a crafty person but I don’t get to experience being crafty as often as I’d like to be! I actually thought about trying something new and signing up for a crafty class at Michael’s or something similar, but I’ve been too nervous to do so. Now that I’ve read this, I’m definitely contemplating it harder!

Lucy 30 March, 2018 - 7:26 am

No more contemplating Kasia! Just do it! You’ll be so glad you did. Can’t wait to see what you make at your craft class.

Amy Kennedy 24 March, 2018 - 1:20 am

Your craft picture looks really cool! Great advice about trying something new! I have a list of things I want to try including learning photography better, and photoshop. I just need to do it!

Tinisha Tosoni 24 March, 2018 - 2:58 am

Variety is the spice of life right? I think that’s the correct expression, haha. It is easy to wake up and everyday is Groundhog Day – it’s wonderful to explore and try new things. Great insight and tips to keep things fresh and exciting!

Anissa 24 March, 2018 - 12:25 pm

I’ve been feeling a little unmotivated to the point where I really have to push myself sometimes to do things. What helps is having a tribe behind me to push me and keep me on my toes. I definitely like the idea of learning new things and making connections.

Lucy 30 March, 2018 - 7:23 am

Feeling unmotivated occasionally is completely understandable. We all experience it at some time or other. Having supportive people around you makes a huge difference and trying new things will usually introduce you to even more of them!

Tara 25 March, 2018 - 7:17 pm

so much yes! getting out of your comfort zone is how we grow!

Lucy 30 March, 2018 - 7:24 am

It really is! It might not be easy. But its worth it.
